Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for this program and how do I register my child?
All pre-schoolers and current kindergartners residing in the Plymouth River School district are eligible to enroll in the program. Please register here.
What if a book is missing from the bag we are taking (or returning)?
Place the bag in the 1000 Book Club bin. Be sure to check the books that belong in the bag both BEFORE you sign it out, and again when you RETURN it. There is a photo list in each bag of the books that belong in that bag.
Families will be held accountable for the books/bags signed out to them.
What if a book in the bag is not interesting to my child?
Feel free to read a book from another source (home or public library), or just talk about the pictures in the book. Don't feel you have to read every word if the book is beyond your child's comprehension level. If a book seems "too simple" for your child, perhaps he or she could "read" the words. If your child is not interested in the subject matter presented in the book, then choose another from your own library! Please remember, the main focus of the program is for your child to enjoy sharing books and stories with you. If a book is not enjoyable, for whatever reason, it is best not to force it.
What do I do if the sign-out card is full?
Place the bag in the 1000 Book Club bin. We will replace the card with a new one and place it back on the rack.
How many bags may we take at one time?
Families may take only one bag at a time and return it within two (2) weeks.
When may we exchange bags?
When school is in session - 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
During school vacations - 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Please call the school (781-741-1530) ahead of time to be sure that the building is accessible to do scheduled cleaning/maintenance. **Please email us if these times do not work for you, we will be happy to make other arrangements**
Please DO NOT park in the bus loop.
What do I do when my child reaches a "milestone" bag?
When a child has completed one of the “milestones” of 25, 50, 75, or 100 bags he/she will receive a certificate, ribbon, t-shirt or trophy, respectively. These awards will be presented at Plymouth River’s all-school meetings (usually the first all-school meeting for the month) or they may be picked up in the school office. Click here to submit for an award.
How long can we stay in the 1000 Book Club program?
Families may continue to check out book bags and receive milestone awards until June of the year their child "graduates" from kindergarten or reaches the goal of 1000 books (whichever comes first). Children may continue in the program until the end of first grade but without milestone awards.

The mission of the 1000 Book Club Program is to provide quality literature to preschoolers and kindergartners while fostering a connection between home and school. The 1000 Book Club Program is a reading program designed for preschoolers, kindergartners and their families.
The 1000 Book Club was founded in 2006 by PRS teachers Elizabeth Danis, Laura Donovan and Sue McHugh.
The program’s goals are:
- To have quality literature readily available so that each child will hear 1000 stories.
- To help children develop a lifetime love of reading and books.
- To provide incentives for families to read with their children.
- To create a positive link between home and school.
- To ease the transition from preschool to kindergarten by frequent visits to PRS for book bag selections and story times
- reading begins in the home. …children acquire knowledge before coming to school which builds the foundation for reading.
- research has shown that “the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”
- we, at Plymouth River School, can help parents promote reading in their homes by providing a free and easy way to obtain quality literature.
